DO BETTER [MV + SINGLE REVIEW]

Chrissy Mae Valentine (@chrissymaevalentine) is back with Do Better, a feel-good release with that 90’s-tinged funky house flair. Guest verses from rappers Esky (@esky.esk) and R.M. Congrats (@r.m.congrats) also bolster the track, which is accompanied by visuals from Aaron Lian (@aaronjwlian) and Chris Yip (@yippykayaye).

Rock the boat, rock the boat

The track starts with a verse from Esky, dropping Michael Jackson ad libs, e-tag blips and an easter egg to his previous single all whilst riding the Common House Kawasaki. Valentine provides the perfect powerful chorus to complement the verses, soaring above the bouncy production. Congrats pushes the second verse forward with his slick delivery, standing before what must be at least 5k worth of Jordans. Dropping some nice vocal inflections and octaves to colour the track further, Congrats does his thang before Valentine closes Do Better with a verse of her own.

Stylistically, the video is consistent with Valentine’s previous visuals. The theme is strong and well executed, with a host of quirky touches that make the beach bop her own. Bold colours separate the verses nicely, making the video a memorable and striking experience. The shots with the camera footage and phone footage overlaid are a nice innovative touch, but the highlight of the video is undoubtedly Horse Man trying to rack some Jordans while Congrats delivers his verse.
