BAD [REVIEW]

I don’t know what I like more about the new Lolli (@lollimusic_) single BAD; the pithy summary she put on her socials (It’s a new single called BAD and it’s about being a bad bitch) or the pure sassiness on the tail end of her rap verse (Apparently I’m too haram to be called halal). Wallah I’m torn.

In a departure from the sizzling reggaeton and afro influence of her debut, Lolli adopts some classic 90’s r&b voicings and elements for her sophomore single. The beat was created by Brisbane-based producer Jack Megraw (@jackmegraw), who gives Lolli some classic ‘My Boo’ inspired chords to glide over.

Lyrically, the track is a 2:20 long middle finger to the haters. Lolli sings about proving the naysayers wrong and maintaining confidence. Empowerment continues to be the main theme for the artist, who builds on her debut single with aplomb. The trap-influence shines through the track as well (shout out to Jack for that stuttered rim before the 808 comes in), which is no obstacle to the song’s cohesion. Here’s hoping that Lolli pursues more versatile vocal performances with her following releases. There is a gap to be filled by artists who don’t stay within conventional hip-hop or rap, and a powerful female voice like Lolli could be the one to change that.

Lolli has more music on the horizon and gigs on the way too. Until then, we have time to rinse and repeat BAD. Honestly, the track gives me flashbacks to the pop/rap stylings of early Cher Lloyd. Except Lolli can rap.

Stream BAD here and Cher Lloyd here to confirm.
