HOW MANY NIGHTS [REVIEW]

After an extended hiatus, Sydney artist MAMI (@itsmamibabyy) is back with her first single in over a year. How Many Nights is the byproduct of the singer’s longstanding partnership with sonic wizard ChunkyLuv (@chunkyluvstudios). Melancholy yet triumphant, the single is a fitting return to the r&b scene for MAMI, whose efforts to expand her sound are evident in the track’s construction.

MAMI delivers a passionate performance, with a killer hook that explodes with the right amount of extra oomph and stereo width (you can’t really have too many MAMI’s in your headphones). Singing about lost love and moving on, How Many Nights is an assertive goodbye letter to an ex-flame. Harmonies and layers are present and arranged gorgeously. In the artist’s own words, the track is part of her efforts to expand her sound - ‘trying to push myself creatively has been so beneficial’.

Drawing from moody r&b and power pop, the track has a haunting soundscape. Filtered synths and vocal chops hang around the corners of the song with subtlety. As per typical Chunkyluv production, the devil is, indeed, in the detail. Glimmering vocal production stands in front of percussive elements and a bassline that deftly slides up and down the octaves (more drill bass in the next single pls).

Despite the busyness of the production, MAMI uses her cadence to parallel the track rather than compete with it. The result is a highly emotive anthem, perfect for the eminent winter chill of the coming months.

MAMI has promised more music in the pipeline and a music video for How Many Nights. Judging by the cover art, it doesn’t seem like it’ll end well for the lad on the right.

Begs the question, who hurt you MAMI?
